Selby High's first entry into public speaking contest

This year, Selby High School made its first entry into the ‘Youth Speaks’ public speaking contest. Representing the school were Joe Johnson, Euan Forsyth, and Sam Ramsay, with Alysha Mather acting as reserve. The contest is open to anyone between the ages of 11-18; those who enter are required to speak in front of a panel of judges for six minutes on any topic that interests them. Our team’s speech was entitled ‘What makes a hero?’ and was an exploration of the ideas of heroism and the qualities required in a role model. Sadly, we did not win, but the team did extremely well nonetheless – especially so given that it was our first ever attempt, and some of our opponents have been competing for many years now. The team had a great night, and hopefully, when we re-enter next year,  we will be better prepared by this year’s experiences.
