Drop Everything & Read

On Friday 8th December, all students and staff took part in a ‘Drop Everything And Read’ event at Selby High School. For 15 minutes, you could have heard a pin drop in the corridors as every member of our school community downed tools – regardless of where they were or what they were doing – to pick up a good book and read. Science labs, computer suites, drama studios and even the gym fell silent on the bell at 10.45am as students scrambled to win reward points for being the first to have their nose in a book.

The initiative was part of our new whole school literacy strategy, which aims to foster a love of reading in every student. Early indications showed that the school library’s lending figures improved significantly as a result, particularly amongst our Year 9 students. Feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with some students – and staff - asking if we can make Drop Everything And Read a weekly initiative.
